Grateful for Having a Plan B

The June 2025 Movement Challenge started yesterday and one of the first steps is establishing a Plan A and a Plan B for walking daily.

My walking plans are as follows: Plan A: Walk 10 minutes on the treadmill (before my working hours). Plan B: Walk 10 minutes during my meal break (if/when unable to walk on the treadmill before my working hours).

So far, so good! HOWEVER, day one of the challenge found me working on a laundry list of to-dos in preparation for the summer.

It went like this: It is DAY ONE of the challenge, I am excited to incorporate more movement in my life, but I am also busy tackling the summer-prep-to-do-list, and before I know it, I look at the time, and it is time for me to start working, AND I have missed the window to get on the treadmill (Plan A).

When I realize that due to time, I cannot get on the treadmill, I panic, but then I remember that Plan B exists for a reason! “Not to worry,” I say to myself (mentally), “I will walk for ten minutes during my meal break.”

If it hadn’t been for Plan B, I would have probably said, “I’ll start tomorrow.” I know this because I have said it many times before. This observation is made not as a dis to my past self but rather as an acknowledgment that when we don’t have a Plan B, and our days don’t go as planned, we are usually left abandoning the new habits we are building (like walking for ten minutes).

With Plan B in place, though, when things don’t go as planned, we still have pretty good odds at progress. This is why, in my mind, having a Plan A and a Plan B is not only a way of ensuring we get movement (which is the goal during The June 2025 Movement Challenge) but also a way of offering ourselves grace!
